Stunningly elegant and rare example of an Art Deco wax seal constructed in France circa 1920.

Hand crafted from Silver and hallmarked with the Boars head for silver items, a tiny makers mark, and the top portion made from ‘Galalithe’ in a lovely teal blue green hue.

The finely detailed foliate repousse work to the stem is wonderful and delicate and contrasts perfectly with the teal blue.

Desk seals or wax seals were designed to be used with a sealing wax to personalise your correspondence such as invitations, letters, thank you cards etc.. the base of the seal would be engraved with you ‘stamp’ which may have been your initials or a personal emblem.

Rarely seen with their original fitted box, this example stands almost 8cm high and would make a lovely addition to any French silver collection or dressing table set.

History of 'Galalithe'

Galalithe is a synthetic plastic material manufactured by the interaction of casein and formaldehyde. The commercial name is derived from the Greek words gala (milk) and lithos (stone).
This new plastic was presented at Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900. In France, Galalithe was distributed by the Compagnie Française de Galalithe located near Paris in Levallois-Perret.
