Magnificent Victorian Sterling Silver ‘Acorn’ Wide Collar/Collier Circa 1880’s
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
This magnificent Victorian Sterling silver Acorn collar is a statement piece in the truest sense of the word.
Dating to the 1880s, possibly the early 1890s, it is an exceptionally wide and impressive collier, measuring an extraordinary 3.2 cm wide.
Pieces of this scale and presence are increasingly rare, and this example stands out immediately for both its bold design and its remarkable condition.
The collar is beautifully constructed with two internal rows of interlocking belcher links, and each perimeter finished with the most charming Acorn motifs. Every Acorn is crisply formed and wonderfully detailed, and remarkably, the necklace shows no dents or dings, something seldom seen in Victorian silver of this age.
Acorns held special meaning in Victorian jewellery, symbolising strength, longevity, and the promise of great things to come. Often given as tokens of hope and prosperity, they were believed to represent how something small could grow into something enduring and powerful. This symbolism adds an extra layer of depth and romance to an already captivating piece.
The collar fastens with an unusually shaped engraved push in‑box clasp, which closes with a reassuring firmness. A delightful hidden detail sits behind the central Acorn on the clasp: a discreet loop designed to hold a pendant or locket, ideally attached with a bolt ring. This thoughtful feature allows the piece to be worn alone as a bold collar or personalised with an additional antique treasure.
Measuring approximately 40 cm in circumference and weighing an impressive 77 grams, this Sterling silver collar offers a wonderful balance of strength and elegance. Dramatic yet refined, it frames the neckline beautifully and commands attention without effort.
This is a truly exceptional Victorian jewel, rich in symbolism, craftsmanship, and presence, and a piece that will not be forgotten once worn.
