Glorious Vintage Retro 18ct Yellow Gold Synthetic Colour Change Sapphire Earrings Circa 1940-50’s
A lovely, twinkling piece of mid-century magic!
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
These earrings are pure joy — a real blast from the glamorous post-war years that still feels so fresh and wearable today!
Crafted in rich 18 carat yellow gold around the 1940s or 1950s, they feature a simple, elegant half-sphere at the top that leads your eye straight to the stars of the show: two large, breathtaking synthetic colour-change Sapphires.
Each one is around 10 carat each (1.3cm round), beautifully faceted so they catch the light and sparkle with real depth. In most lighting they glow with a rich, saturated purple, but shift with a magical little surprise — that soft blueish hue as the light changes. It’s captivating! The Sapphires present in pristine condition, not a nick or facet wear, truly immaculate!
What makes them even more special is the story behind the stones. Back around 1910, jewellers started creating these lab-grown corundum (Sapphire) gems (doped with vanadium) to give people an affordable taste of that rare Alexandrite colour-change effect. They became especially popular after World War II, when the world was ready for a bit of glamour and femininity again during those years of economic recovery. These big, bold earrings perfectly capture that optimistic, joyful spirit of the era.
They’re very substantial too — together they weigh over 10.7 grams — yet they hang beautifully impress from every angle thanks to the exquisite open gallery settings and secure 18ct gold butterfly backs for pierced ears.
