Antique WWI Era Rolled Gold ‘Touch Wud’ Lucky Charm - Circa 1915
A rare survivor from the early 20th century WWI era, an original and rare to find ‘Touch Wud’ charm/pendant in Rolled Gold.
The Touch Wud charms, designed by Henry Brandon in 1914, are a fascinating example of early 20th-century decorative arts. Originally created as a novelty item, these charms hold a unique place in the realm of collectibles. The term "Touch Wud" itself is derived from a playful superstition; it suggests that by touching the charm, one could ward off bad luck or misfortune.
Evidence from surviving charms suggests they were frequently rubbed, indicating that soldiers kept them close, hoping to avoid fatal encounters in battle.
The popularity of Touch Wud charms peaked in the 1910s and 1920s, coinciding with a growing interest in personal accessories that combined both function and symbolism.
They became fashionable items often worn as pendants on necklaces or attached to watch chains.
Over the years, these charms have been embraced by collectors, with many seeking out specific designs or rare pieces.
Today, Touch Wud charms are not only appreciated for their aesthetic appeal but also for their historical significance, representing a charming slice of early 20th-century culture.
