Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Chatelaine Hallmarked For London 1890
Chatelaines became especially popular during the Victorian era, worn at the waist as both a practical accessory and a statement of status. Originally used to carry essential tools—such as scissors, thimbles, and notebooks—they evolved into ornate decorative pieces, often reflecting the wearer’s taste and refinement.
Today, they are admired not only for their functionality but as fascinating relics of 19th-century daily life.
This particular example is an impressive four-chain chatelaine, crafted entirely in Sterling silver and surmounted by a wonderfully ornate repoussé figural group. To the reverse, it features its original clip fitting, allowing it to be worn as intended.
Below the main mount, a further decorative figure group leads to four beautifully detailed openwork chains, each suspending its original accessory via the original Sterling silver hallmarked secure dog clips.
The accessories themselves are a delight: an ornate Sterling silver scissor case lined in rich royal blue velvet, a matching thimble holder with opening top and velvet lining, and a charming rotating wheel pin cushion—also finished in blue velvet.
The fourth piece is an aide-memoire, complete with its original three celluloid pages; while this component appears to differ slightly in repoussé work and is likely an addition of the same era. Such variations are commonly seen in antique chatelaines, as pieces were often assembled over time with tools from different makers.
All elements are fully hallmarked (except the aide-mémoire), bearing the maker’s mark “CM,” likely attributed to Miller Brothers (Charles Dew Miller), alongside the London assay mark (leopard’s head) and a date letter for 1890, firmly placing it in the late Victorian period.
Measuring approximately 28 cm from the top mount to the lowest accessory, this is a substantial and visually impressive piece. It remains in beautiful condition, with crisp detailing and a wonderful sense of presence, making it both a remarkable collector’s item and a captivating display piece which of course can still be worn!
