This exquisite antique Victorian 9-carat rose gold ivy-patterned ring is a beautiful example of late 19th-century craftsmanship, made by Edward Vaughton of Warstone Lane and Vyse Street, Birmingham—one of the city’s most respected jewellers of the era.

Fully hallmarked for Chester, 9 carat gold (375) and the date letter for 1900, this ring carries over a century of history with remarkable grace. 

Crafted in warm, rosy gold with rich golden hues to the background texturing, it features a wide 8.4 mm band that encircles the finger with a continuous Ivy leaf design, intricately engraved and textured with fine detail. 

The Ivy motif extends seamlessly around the entire circumference, creating a sense of unity and flow that is both decorative and symbolic.

In Victorian jewellery, Ivy represented eternal love, fidelity, and steadfast friendship—its evergreen nature symbolising affection that endures through time. This sentiment made Ivy a cherished motif for sentimental and romantic pieces, often given as tokens of lasting devotion.

Excellent antique condition. There is no fading or wear to the Ivy patterning, crisp and in excellent condition. Some casting lines to interior shank, mentioning for accuracy only, original and insignificant, also the original ‘join’ line is subtly visible, also noting for accuracy.  No thinning. No previous resizes.  No repairs.  No issues to note.

EDWARD VAUGHTON

Edward Vaughton was a distinguished Birmingham jeweller and goldsmith, active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was part of the renowned Vaughton family, whose firm, Vaughton & Sons, was established around 1819 and became one of the most respected names in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Operating from Warstone Lane and Vyse Street, the company was celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship in fine jewellery, medals, and regalia. Their work combined artistry with technical precision, earning them commissions for both private clients and official institutions. Over time, the firm expanded its expertise to include sporting trophies and civic insignia, and in 1911 they famously produced the original FA Cup trophy.

Edward Vaughton played a key role in continuing the family’s legacy during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, upholding the tradition of quality and design excellence that made the Vaughton name synonymous with Birmingham’s golden age of jewellery making.
