Egyptian revival at its finest!  These highly collectible Victorian earrings with genuine scarab beetles date to the late Victorian era to the turn of the last century.

With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, displays at the World’s Fairs, and Cleopatra's Needle being erected in Central Park in 1881 the craze for all things Egyptian surged once again.

The Victorians embroidered insect wings to their closing, while some even used live Beetles and fireflies as ornaments for their hair or bodices!  Others not so daring chose to wear preserved insects such as in these earrings as jewellery, bracelets, necklaces, brooches and earrings amongst others.

These fine examples are crafted from 9ct rose gold, a light rose which is niether rose nor yellow and beautifully set in to raised ornate settings, each of the little claws perfectly positioned to hold and support these iridescent little beetles and they do almost shimmer!

The strong, long shepherds are firm and solid in the ear and hook into a safety hook which just may be a later addition, if so they are wonderful and ensure these stunning earrings are secure in the ear.
