This exquisite antique Victorian sovereign case is a superb example of fine 19th-century craftsmanship by the renowned Birmingham maker Alfred Wigley, who was registered in 1874 and known for his exceptional watch cases.

Crafted in 1886, this piece is crafted from luxurious 15-carat rose gold, radiating a soft, warm glow that only antique gold can achieve.  It bears full Birmingham hallmarks, including Wigley’s maker’s mark and the date letter ‘m’ confirming its authenticity and age.

Weighing an impressive 17.5 grams, this is a substantial and beautifully made piece. The case opens and closes with a crisp, satisfying snap, and the spring-loaded sovereign bed remains in perfect working order—a testament to the enduring quality of Wigley’s workmanship.

Both sides are richly adorned with intricate foliate engraving, showcasing the artistry of the Victorian era. One side features a circular cartouche delicately inscribed with the intertwined initials CM or MC, adding a personal and historical charm.

Elegant and timeless, this sovereign case looks magnificent when worn on an antique watch chain, making it a perfect addition for collectors or anyone who appreciates the beauty of fine Victorian goldwork. A true piece of history, beautifully preserved and ready to be treasured once more.
