An unusual piece of jewellery dating to the late Victorian era which we ‘believe’ could have originally been a long guard chain that has been ingeniously repurposed into this amazing and versatile antique necklace we see today.. of course it could also be original.. we simply don’t know!

What we have though is a fine antique chain which can be worn two ways.

The first is ‘short’… simply clip the gorgeous fancy faceted dog-clip to the chain and you instantly have a triple chain look, she measures 44cm worn this way!

Or secondly wear her long!  Slip over the head for the classic muff chain look, you’ll have two strands to one side and one to the other with the dog clip resting below the bust line as worn this way she’s an impressive 84cm long!

Each link is faceted as is the dog-clip and a tiny link joining the two strands and single strand (see photo) therefore all components are original and matching.

Ridiculously versatile, style this one however you please and don’t forget the dog-clip is there to add your favourite pendant or locket!

A quick word about gold carat.  Antique jewellery is not always a standard 9ct, 15ct 18ct etc.  Jewellers in the ‘old days’ would craft their pieces from gold on hand and as long as they did the right thing sold it at or ABOVE what they advertised it as all was fine!

With technology and the advent of XRF - X-ray fluorescence - which emits X-rays into a metal, measures the energy released by the excited electrons to determine what the sample is made of, and provides results in seconds, a more accurate analysis of the composition of gold etc can be determined.  Non destructive - we’ve seen antique pieces destroyed by over enthusiastic acid testing..
