A superb and early Carnelian Intaglio seal fob dating to the Georgian era circa 1810-20’s.

Crafted from 9ct rose gold and set with a large carved intaglio Carnelian depicting the Greek goddess of love, beauty and desire - Aphrodite - and (one of) her lover(s) Ares, the God of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle.

For the eagle eyed amongst us one can see Aphrodites foot resting upon a ‘golden apple’… the  Greek mythology is beyond the full scope of this description, but she received the prize of beauty from Paris (a golden apple) because she promised him, in exchange, the love of the most beautiful woman in the world!

A large example this fabulous intaglio seal measures 3cm tall (without the accompanying split ring), and the base 2.3cm x 2.0cm.

Curvaceous plinths flow to the top finial, and a slightly later but antique ’split’ ring accompanies this wonderful piece of history.

A must for the Georgian jewellery collector, steeped in not only history but Greek mythology.
