Natural salmon coral bead necklaces were particularly popular during the Victorian (1837-1901) and Edwardian (1901-1910) eras. These necklaces often featured beads made from the precious coral found in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly the species known as Corallium rubrum, which has a beautiful pink to salmon hue.

During the Victorian era, coral was highly valued for its beauty and supposed protective properties. It was often worn as a talisman, believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune. The Victorian aesthetic favoured intricate designs, and coral beads were frequently combined with other materials like gold, pearls, or diamonds to create elaborate pieces. Necklaces could range from simple strands of uniform beads to more complex designs with decorative clasps and additional embellishments.

In the Edwardian era, the style shifted towards a more delicate and refined aesthetic. Coral necklaces became lighter and more ethereal, often featuring smaller beads and more intricate arrangements. The use of coral continued to symbolise elegance and sophistication, and it was commonly worn by women of high society.

They remain highly sought after by collectors today, appreciated for their beauty, historical context, and the craftsmanship involved in their creation.
