Antique Early Victorian 20ct Heavily Gold Cased Yellow Gold Lorgnette Circa 1820-30’s
A lorgnette is a pair of spectacles (glasses) mounted on a handle. The word comes from the French ‘lorgne’ which means “to take a sidelong look at”.
Lorngettes were invented in England by George Adams circa 1770 and remained popular into the early 1800s when more elaborate forms were created.
This very fine example dates to the late Georgian to early Victorian era and is designed as a sprung, pull down release lorgnette which is in prefect working order.
Heavily gold cased to all elements including the lens frames with ornate Corinthian style and stunning detail to the finger ring.
The lorgnette was a dual purpose item.. used as much as a piece of jewellery as a functional pair of eye glasses. Fashionable ladies of the day preferred them to spectacles due to their ease of use and beauty.
