This striking early Victorian 15ct gold cased fob seal (circa 1840s–1850s) is a real beauty—substantial, tactile, and full of quiet history.

Heavily cased in rich 15ct yellow gold and deeply chased with flowing foliate scrolls, it features that classic rayed sunburst engraving across the domed top section exactly as one would expect from the finest work of the Georgian and early Victorian periods.

Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.

The base is set with a large 2cm x 1.7cm oval Carnelian intaglio: a proud demi-lion rampant in profile, holding a Tudor rose in its paw above the elegant intertwined monogram “JR”. It’s a personal heraldic device—almost certainly the original owner’s own family crest or badge—blending the lion’s timeless symbolism of courage and nobility with the romantic Tudor rose of English heritage.

*Lion - Strength and bravery
*Tudor rose -English royal/romantic heritage

These intimate seals were made for gentlemen who still sealed their letters the old-fashioned way, and this one has survived in wonderful condition.

At a very generous 3.5 cm tall with a 2.2 × 2 cm base and a large ornate top bail, it suspends perfectly on chain or silk ribbon.
Turn this beauty it in your hand and you can feel every chased detail and the satisfying weight of such a substantial large piece.

Bold, romantic, and genuinely rare—this isn’t just antique jewellery; it’s a little piece of someone’s Victorian story, ready to start the next chapter with you. (Especially if the initials JR hold a special place your heart!).
