Dating to the late 19th century to early 20th century circa 1905 this fine example of Australian history was expertly made by A.Macrow and Sons, established in 1891 Melbourne.

Featuring five fine graduated round solid opals exhibiting a myriad of the strongest colours we have seen in a very long time.

The colour range is superb, predominately with a body colour of blue, with greens, turquoise, and with delicate flashes of reds, this ring exudes an inner glow that is mesmerising.

Hand crafted from rich lush 15ct yellow gold, hallmarked crisply as such, and with Macrows name and, interestingly his hallmark also, which is something even the reference books we have researched do not seem to have. We believe the addition of his hallmark, plus name, is quite rare.

The ring has a spread of 1.8cm x 5.5mm with low rounded shoulders to a lovely thick and solid shank.

This is a true collectors piece given its nod to early Australian history, and deserves to become an heirloom piece, however it if infinitely wearable today and truly deserves to be seen.

Lovely antique condition. Opals are free from damage, lustrous and bright. No thinning to shank. Claws are all original and safe and secure.

**Guarantee of Quantity Mark

In 1889 the Melbourne Manufacturer Jewellers Association introduced the ‘guarantee of quantity mark’ system which consisted of three square hallmarks.

The first had the makers punch, the second the caratage of 9ct , 12ct , 15ct or 18ct, and the third a symbol representing the ‘guarantee’ of caratage.

9ct, the ‘wheat bundle’,

12ct, the’ pick and shovel’,

15ct, the ‘hanging sheep / fleece,

18ct, the ’sailing ship’.

The four symbols were derived from the four quadrants of the Advance Australia coat of arms.
