Crafted by the respected firm of Johnson & Simonsen (and subsequently H. Simonsen Pty Ltd) circa 1900-1910, it carries their clear hallmarks and represents one of the finest makers of the period in Victoria.
Johnson and Simonsen - 1895-1914
H. Simonsen Pty Ltd - 1914-1927
The firm of Johnson and Simonsen, wholesale and manufacturing jewellers, gem merchants and importers, was established at Swanston Street, Melbourne, in 1895. They moved to Bourke Street and finally to 285 Little Collins Street.
Johnson’s and Simonsen were advertising in Wise’s Victorian P.O. Directory of 1903: “A complete Range of Designs and Prices in Brooches, Bangles, rings, Links, Lockets, Studs, etc. of our own Manufacture”.
Simonsens’ became one of the major jewellery manufactures in Melbourne. A vast range of popular Australian jewellery in 9ct gold was produced. Of interest, Hermann Simonsen registered gold reproductions of Australia’s first stamp issue, the famous “Kangaroo” series of 1913, for use as pendants, charms, links and brooches (Reg. Design No. 1011).
The standard marks of Johnson and Simonsen, and then H. Simonsen Pty Ltd was a “Square and Compass” used in conjunction with the guarantee marks of the M.J.A. of Victoria.

Wide cigar band rings like this have remained incredibly popular for well over a century, and it’s easy to see why — they look simply wonderful on the finger, offering a presence and simple elegance in equal measure.
This particular example measures a very generous 1.1 cm wide all the way around, giving it a bold silhouette that feels both substantial and graceful.
The warm 9ct rose gold has that soft antique hue so beloved in vintage pieces, with a smooth, luxurious finish that hugs the finger beautifully. While it is hallmarked as a size O (approximately US 7¼), its exceptional width means it actually wears more like an M½ to N. Of course, it can be resized if needed to suit you perfectly if desired!
These wide antique Australian rings are becoming increasingly hard to find, making this a lovely opportunity to own a genuine piece of Melbourne’s jewellery history.
Substantial, comfortable, and timeless, it’s the kind of ring you’ll reach for every day and treasure for many years to come!
