Antique 9ct Rose Gold Bloodstone And Carnelian ‘Spinner’ Fob - Birmingham 1887
A Rare Victorian Treasure
Fully hallmarked for manufacture in Birmingham, 1887, this beautiful antique 9ct rose gold Carnelian and Bloodstone spinner fob displays all the wonderful character, detail and craftsmanship associated with late Victorian jewellery.
Please note, boxes and chains are for display only unless otherwise stated.
The fob centres on a substantial circular reversible spinner, traditionally set with rich Carnelian to one side and Bloodstone to the reverse, allowing either stone to be displayed simply by rotating the central section within its frame. The spinner is slightly firm within its setting, while still rotating smoothly when gently turned by hand and is secured beautifully within its setting.
Measuring approximately 3.35cm from the top of the bale to the base of the spinner and approximately 2.29cm from shoulder to shoulder, and weighing a substantial 5.86 grams, the fob is beautifully proportioned with wonderful presence.
The upper mount is particularly decorative, fashioned in an ornate openwork scrolling design with finely engraved foliate detailing. A series of polished spherical bead accents are positioned around the outer edge of the mount, creating a charming crown-like silhouette and adding wonderful dimension and character to the piece. The design rises to a central polished knop beneath the suspension bail, giving the fob a beautifully balanced and distinctly Victorian finish, while still allowing the reversible spinner to remain the focal point.
Beautifully hallmarked to the spinner for Birmingham 1887, together with the maker’s mark that is partially obscure, to the mount ‘9’ ‘375’, and the bale is also stamped ‘9’, ‘375’, which is a lovely touch for those of us who particuarly love their hallmarked pieces!
The warm tone of the antique rose gold beautifully complements the rich reddish-brown colouring of the Carnelian and the deeper, characteristic tones of the Bloodstone, creating a wonderfully handsome, tactile and highly wearable Victorian fob.
