Antique Victorian Vulcanite Opening Locket Circa 1870-80’s
Crafted from Vulcanite - patented by Charles Goodyear in 1846 when a substitute for Jet, particularly Whitby Jet, was needed due to rising costs and a demand for mourning jewellery was high.
Designed as a large 5.8cm x 3cm opening locket (not including top ring and dog clip) which opens to reveal a glass paned window to which a photo can be easily placed.
To the front the Lily of the valley motif is applied in high relief and to the surmount an ornate ribbon garland which holds the top ring and versatile swivel dog clip .
A poignant piece of Victoriana, large and impressive when worn, and with the swivel dog clip suitable to accommodate a variety of chains and styling options.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition. Opens and closes with a nice snap, very secure. No chips or damage to locket. Swivel dog clip is strong and solid, functions perfectly. Internal glass pane has one small chip which is hard to see especially when a photo is inserted. Lovely Victorian locket which receives compliments when ever it is worn.
