This unusual ring is French in origin (stamped with the French eagles head for 18ct gold) but at first glance appears to be channeling the Scottish flavour with its stunningly beautiful ‘Thistle’ basket gallery… However in French art and crafts, thistles are one of the oldest and most frequently represented motifs.
It is also the logo of the French city Nancy, and more globally, of the Lorraine region, symbolizing the Lorraine dukes' motto: "Gather thistles, expect prickles" ("qui s'y frotte, s'y pique"). In the Basque Country, southwest France, the thistle is called the "Flower of the sun" - an auspicious symbol.
Crafted in 18ct white gold and set with large oval faceted intense purple Amethyst measuring approximately 17 x 14 x 12mm or 15cts.
Deeply saturated with rose pink flashes this beautiful Amethyst is almost ‘Siberian’ in classification due to its colouring!
Six secure flat claws secure the Amethyst to the then incredible basket gallery which is a series of six intricate Thistle motifs.
Flat upswept shoulders flow to a half round shank which bears the Eagle hallmark for 18ct gold.

Very good vintage preowned condition. No thing to shank. Hallmark clear but small. Claws original and secure. Some very minor marks to Amethyst and natural inclusions can be seen under scrutiny. Stunningly beautiful Amethyst ring.
