Victorian Sterling Silver Locket And Bookchain Hallmarked For 1881

Collections: Sold Archive

Glorious antique Victorian Sterling Silver locket and original bookchain dating to the 1880’s with hallmarks on the locket for Birmingham, date letter for 1881.

The ‘Aesthetic’ era - 1885-1901 - is a period during the Victorian years where jewellery was inspired by simple naturalistic themes including birds, bees, leaves etc, and even though this locket is a hair earlier that 1885 we can see the beginnings of this naturalistic movement!

Featuring a sweet bluebird (or swallow) in full flight beneath a floral garland to the oval centre with an equally exquisite floral border then encircled with typical raised spikes to the outer rim.

A large 1.7cm bolt ring clasp fastens the 46cm associated engraved book chain beautifully, and, like most book chains this one is plain to the verso enabling it to be worn either side for a versatile look, and of course it goes without saying the collar can be worn sans locket for a streamlined chic look!
