This lovely all original Victorian guard chain dates to the turn of the century circa 1900 and is crafted in ‘rolled gold’.
Gold-filled or rolled gold plate is a composite material where sheets of gold are bonded by heat and pressure to a core of base metal such as nickel or brass. The thickness of the gold determines how long the item will last in normal use before the gold wears through and the base metal shows. Gold filled should be thicker and constitute at least 1/20th of the weight of the metal in the entire article.
Featuring fancy faceted links with no wear or dulling to the finish ad to the eye appearing just as good as solid gold, and measuring a traditional 140cm - 55 inches, which can be worn long, doubled or tripled and has a convenient lobster clasp suitable for your favourite pendant or locket.
These early chains were made with care and to last… not comparable to ‘gold plated’ modern items and with care will last another lifetime.
