Superb Antique Victorian Heavy 15ct Rose Gold Secret Opening Orb Watch Winder/Fob Circa 1890-1900
Please note, chains are for display only unless otherwise stated.
An ingenious piece of functional jewellery dating to the late Victorian era in the form of an opening ‘Orb’ which hold a secret hidden watch key for winding ones pocket watch or carriage clock.
Crafted from 15ct rose gold, this piece is heavy - almost 8 grams - solid through and through and of a superior quality, and style we have not seen before, perhaps a commission piece for a superb pocket watch for a wealth client?
When closed this Orb is beautifully round, silky smooth and rich against the skin.. and when opened the hinged ‘key’ simply folds down with ease. The key is also very substantial and solid, with grooved castle-like turret spokes. The top jump ring is later and in 9ct gold.
When the key is extended there is a compartment space left inside the Orb which could hold a secret momento if this is desired, this piece can be worn open or closed, the choice is yours!
A superior piece of jewellery, if not unique then presenting very rarely to the market.. a must for the jewellery connoisseur.
