Superb Antique Australian 9ct Rose Gold Amethyst Bangle Circa 1910
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
This breathtaking piece is a superb antique Australian Edwardian 9ct rose gold and Amethyst bangle dating to circa 1910. The design is striking in its simplicity — a slender, solid rose gold oval bangle that draws all attention to its centrepiece: a magnificent rectangular cushion-cut Amethyst of extraordinary size and beauty.
The Amethyst measures an impressive 19.4 x 16.2 x 10.8 mm - weighing approximately 20 carats - and is set securely in a refined six-claw mount.
Its colour is a rich medium-toned purple, alive with flashes of violet and lilac that dance across its expertly cut facets. Remarkably, this Amethyst shows no facet wear despite its age, a testament to both the durability of the stone and the care with which it has been preserved for over a century.
“Around 1910, Australian jewellers were establishing a reputation for bold yet elegant designs, often showcasing locally sourced gemstones in settings that emphasised their natural beauty. Amethyst, mined in Queensland and New South Wales, was a favoured stone, admired for its regal colour and symbolic associations with clarity, calm, and protection. Unlike the more delicate filigree styles of Europe, Australian makers often preferred strong, clean designs that highlighted the gemstone itself — as perfectly demonstrated in this piece”.
A Jewel of Distinction
The bangle’s sliding adjustment mechanism ensures both strength and practicality, while its minimalistic gold frame allows the Superb Amethyst to take centre stage. This balance of bold gemstone and refined design is characteristic of early Australian jewellery, which blended Edwardian elegance with a uniquely local sense of style.
This is not just a jewel — it is a statement of our Australian heritage, a rare survivor of the Edwardian era in excellent condition, and a piece destined to impress both as a wearable treasure and as a collector’s jewel of Australian historical significance.
