Arranged across the finger in a classic graduated five-stone design are three natural blue Sapphires interspersed with two sparkling Old European-cut Diamonds, creating a gorgeous contrast of rich colour against crisp, bright flashes of antique Diamond sparkle.

Taking centre stage is a beautifully coloured oval-cut Sapphire measuring approximately 4.30mm x 3.30mm, with an estimated weight of approximately 0.27ct. The Sapphire displays a particularly attractive vivid medium royal to cornflower blue, with wonderful flashes of intense cobalt and electric blue as it catches the light. Its colour is rich and saturated without appearing overly dark, allowing the beautiful blue to remain lively and immediately noticeable on the hand.

Completing the graduated arrangement are two round blue Sapphires positioned at either end, each measuring approximately 2.50mm and estimated at approximately 0.07ct each. Their lovely deep blue colouring complements the central Sapphire beautifully, bringing an estimated total Sapphire weight of approximately 0.41ct.

Nestled between the Sapphires are two charming Old European-cut natural Diamonds, each measuring approximately 2.20mm and estimated at approximately 0.04ct each, for a combined estimated Diamond weight of approximately 0.08ct. Their traditional antique cutting produces those lovely individual flashes of light characteristic of early hand-cut Diamonds, and the bright white sparkle provides a gorgeous contrast against the richly coloured blue Sapphires.

The gemstones are held within a wonderfully substantial yet elegant 18ct yellow gold quarter-hoop setting, beautifully proportioned to create an impressive presence across the finger, measuring a pleasing 1.37cm x 5.01mm.  Viewed from the side, the craftsmanship becomes even more apparent, with a gorgeous pierced and scrolling under-gallery beneath the gemstones. The open scrollwork gives the setting a beautifully decorative, almost architectural quality while allowing light to enter beneath the stones.

The shoulders are equally charming, tapering gracefully away from the setting and decorated with lightly fluted engraving, forming an elegant fan-like pattern typical of the period. This subtle detailing gives the ring additional texture and refinement without detracting from the gemstones and flows beautifully into the polished yellow gold band.

The hallmarks are particularly crisp and wonderfully well preserved more than a century after they were struck. Fully hallmarked for Chester, 1914, they are a particularly lovely feature in their own right, with an 18ct gold fineness mark and ‘crown’ also discreetly positioned beneath the gallery to the inner upper shoulder.

Jewellery bearing the Chester assay mark is increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly as the Chester Assay Office closed in 1962. As a result, beautifully preserved Chester-hallmarked pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find and do not present to the market nearly as often as examples from the larger assay offices, making this gorgeous ring all the more special.

Combining wonderfully rich Sapphires, Old European-cut Diamonds and exquisite period craftsmanship, this ring is appealingly low rise and its comfortable design enables it to be worn with ease and stacked perfectly with wedding-type bands or classic full hoop eternity bands for a unique and individual stacking arrangement.
