Diffusion Treatments
Used to enhance colour this process involves heating the gemstone to high temperatures, and once reached the molecular structure of the material ‘loosens’ allowing the chemicals to enter the stone. The ‘chemicals’ used generally are natural components of the material( being enhanced) itself. Sapphires are mostly heated with alumina, titanium and iron ( all of which occur naturally in blue Sapphires) which enhance its blue colour.
Why are gems treated?
There is no doubt over the centuries and still today ‘enhancements’ of gemstones can be to deceive …. However this is not the only reason and many treatments improve the durability and appearance of the gem. They also make more gems available to the market therefore boosting the availability to more people at affordable price points.
The bottom line is as long as the customer is aware and the treatments are disclosed before purchase.
