Our instincts and knowledge tell us that this chain quite possibly started its life as ‘Guard chain’ sometimes know also as a muff chain, however these antique guard chains traditionally ranged between 150cm (60 inches) to 162cm (64 inches), sometimes less than this at 50-54 inches. this particular chain is 107cm or 42 inches.
It was quite common with these long guard chains for the ‘family’ to cut them down to shorter lengths and distribute between the daughters or grand daughters on the passing of an elderly matriarch. The ’20’ inches we believe is missing so to speak would have been the perfect length for a single strand necklace given perhaps to one daughter and the remainder - this 107cm length retained for another daughter.
Crafted as a rope twist in bright and yellow 9ct gold and weighing a lovely hefty 27.28 grams and worn full extended tends to just skim the belly button area, doubled, both strands sit mid décolletage.
Of course one length can be worn close to the throat with the other hanging lower, the options are many.
With a small bolt ring clasp for closure which rarely need to be used as this one slips over the head.
107cm or 42 Inches
XRF tested as 9ct gold
Very very good condition. No repairs to be seen however unreliable close examination we believe this one has been professionally shortened some time in antiquity and had slightly more modern jump rings and bolt ring added.Purchase Summary
