Beautiful Victorian 9ct Yellow Gold Carved Floral Jet Drop Earrings 1880-1900
Dark Romance!
Beautifully carved with rich glossy black jet and finished with fine 9ct yellow gold shepherd hooks, these late Victorian earrings are full of character. Elegant, dramatic and wonderfully wearable, they make a striking little piece of history.
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
A beautiful pair of Late Victorian jet drop earrings, wonderfully rich in both character and period detail. Each polished jet drop is carved in high relief with a charming floral and foliate motif, with rounded flower heads rising from the surface and finely worked leaves sweeping beneath. The contrast between the softly sculptural carving and the highly polished black ground gives the design wonderful depth, catching the light beautifully as the earrings move.
The jet section measure approximately 2.59cm long x 1.76cm wide, creating a lovely generous presence without feeling overly heavy. From the top of the 9ct yellow gold shepherd hooks, the earrings have an overall drop of approximately 4.1cm. The warm yellow gold is a particularly lovely contrast against the glossy black jet, with a delicate coiled wire detail around the base of each shepherd hook.
Jet became one of the most recognisable materials in Victorian jewellery, particularly during the great fashion for mourning jewellery in the second half of the nineteenth century. A lightweight fossilised material capable of taking a beautiful deep polish and intricate carving, it was especially prized for its rich, velvety-black appearance. Whitby in Yorkshire became particularly renowned for its jet jewellery and highly skilled carving, although we are not attributing this particular pair specifically to Whitby.
They are a wonderfully wearable example of Victorian jewellery — beautifully proportioned, full of detail and with that unmistakable glossy depth that makes antique jet so appealing

Condition
The earrings present beautifully for their age, with the carving remaining wonderfully defined and the jet retaining a lovely polished lustre. There is a minute chip to the reverse of one earring at the small opening through which the gold fitting is attached, together with a very tiny nibble to the outer edge at approximately the 7 o’clock position. Both are very minor and do not detract from the overall appearance. The 9ct yellow gold shepherd hooks are secure, with their charming coiled detailing intact, possibly a later addition. No issues to note, stunning!Explore Our Collection
