Beautiful Antique Victorian Sterling Silver ‘Cherub Heart’ Desk Paper Clip - London
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
An exquisite celebration of Victorian romance and fine craftsmanship, this superb antique sterling silver cherub paper clip is a piece that immediately captures the imagination. Rich in detail, weight, and sentiment, it is far more than a functional desk accessory—it is a miniature work of art, created for admiration as much as use.
Beautifully formed as a Heart, the design centres on a delightful group of five cherub faces, their gentle expressions nestled within softly modelled wings. The Heart’s outer edge is decorated with flowing scrollwork and the romantic pairing of cherubs and hearts gives this piece a charming, almost poetic presence that feels both intimate and timeless.
This is a notably substantial example, fitting comfortably in the palm of the hand and measuring 8.5 cm by 6.5 cm, with an impressive weight of 58.7 grams. The quality is immediately apparent the moment it is lifted. It is beautifully hinged, opens and closes smoothly, and remains in excellent working order—testament to the skill of its maker and the care it has received over the years.
Beneath the Cherubs sits a plain cartouche area, originally intended for engraving. This offers a wonderful opportunity to add your own monogram initials or a discreet personal mark, allowing the piece to be personalised while remaining entirely in keeping with its original design.
The reverse is plain and highly polished and bears the maker’s mark “WC” for William Comyns & Sons, along with a full set of clear UK hallmarks: the Lion passant for Sterling silver, the Leopard’s head for London, and the date letter for 1899 - the front. Panel bears these hallmarks also , discreetly placed to the outer edge.
Condition is lovely. There is only the slightest softening to the cherub faces, the gentle result of years of being held and admired rather than any form of damage.
An unusual and highly appealing piece, we have not encountered another example in this heart-shaped form. Whether destined for a refined writing desk, a discerning collection of Victorian silver, or as a deeply romantic gift, this enchanting paper clip has a presence that is impossible to ignore.
Once seen, it is very easy to fall in love with it!

CONDITION
Very good to excellent antique condition. This amazing piece opens and closes perfectly, has some patina - we’ve purposely left this for authenticity - and has no dents/dings to the front. The wee cherub faces show a softness that is almost definitely original and due to gentle loving, noting for accuracy only. The back panel is plain and shows minor marks here and there. A glorious curio for the collector!
