Since their creation in the 16th century pocket watches, until the latter quarter of the 19th century, required a key to wind and set the time, and remained in use until Adrian Philippe invented the stem winding watch in 1842.

The accompanying keys were often ornate and or symbolic in design, and crafted as beautiful functional pieces of jewellery befitting the pocket watch and their wealthy owners.

This charming example dates to around the era between 1850-1870 and is designed in the form of an early flint lock pistol with delicate engraving to the barrel and butt.

Measuring a lovely 5cm in length this early piece of functional jewellery could today be worn as a conversation starting pendant on an antique chain.
