A strikingly good example of long drop Whitby Jet earrings dating to the late 19th century circa 1870-80.
Designed as an impressively large pair of long drop earrings (5cm x 2.0cm) for pierced ears, with 9ct gold shepherds hook fittings, and suspended below is a large oval link, glossy and highly polished, which then suspends the tear-dropped main feature - a highly ornate floral ‘rose’ cameo in high relief to the centre, and bordered with a saw-tooth edging to a further outer border which is also ornately carved. The verso is plain and highly polished.
Face framing and elegant, light - but not too light on the ear, and in incredibly good condition, this particularly fine example of Whitby Jet earrings are a must for the collector or any earring connoisseur!
“The jet found at Whitby, in England, is the "Jet Rock”] unit of the Mulgrave Shale Member, which is part of the Whitby Mudstone Formation. This jet deposit was formed approximately 181 million years ago, during the Toarcian age of the Early Jurassic epoch. Whitby Jet is the fossilised wood from species similar to the extant Chilean pine Araucaria araucana. The deposit extends throughout North York Moors National Park.
Used since the Stone Age for jewellery, but perhaps best known for is surge in popularity during the Victorian era after Queen Victoria wore it while mourning her beloved Prince Albert”.

Very good to excellent antique condition. No chips or cracks to Whitby Jet. Crisp defined edges and floral cameo. Hooks would be later, 9ct gold, strong, solid and straight. Minor marks to highly polished verso, noting for accuracy only. No issues to note, stunning!
