After Charles Darwins ‘On the origin of the Species’ was published in 1859 there followed a fascination by the Victorians for natural history and biological enthusiasm.  Gentleman of the day began traveling the world drawing, describing and collecting animal and plant specimens.

Our early jewellers, with good reason, capitalised on this enthusiasm and began crafting these desirable pieces in gold and sometimes silver.

This early piece would almost definitely be Australian in manufacture however the small hallmarks is obscure and unidentifiable, the 9ct stamp is crisp.

With fine decorative floral engraving to the front rose gold capping, plain to the verso, supporting an original sharks tooth in fine condition.

The top ring is a later non original addition, and probably much earlier than the tooth pendant.  One of the most unusual ’split’ rings we have encountered, it is designed as a ‘faux’ bolt ring.. however it is not designed to open and close with an inner spring as we normally see, there simply isn’t any inner working mechanisms.  It simply operates like a Georgian split ring and ‘pulls apart’ to slip and slide on any charm, fob or pendant you desire!
