Releasing from our personal collection this antique 12ct yellow gold and exquisite shell Cameo of a young lad.
Impeccably carved this handsome young boy is detailed in profile, in period costume, the detail is superb. We do not know who this young boy is but believe it could have been carved, at great expense at the time, of a beloved son of a wealthy family.
Set in a frame of gold which is unsigned but tested as 12ct gold and would have began its life as a brooch however the brooch fittings have been removed and a bale attached to an already existing top loop and is now a much more wearable pendant.
The box it came to us in is equally stunning and probably/possibly the original. The box is easier for us to date and would be late Georgian or very early Victorian. Tooled in red leather with its original fabric which has deteriorated over the centuries however we love it just the way it is.
The cameo fits in the box beautifully… is it original? We have no way of knowing but it is most definitely of the era.
A wonderful and poignant addition to any serious Cameo collectors jewellery collection we hope this one brings its new owner as much pleasure as it has us.
Important information regarding Cameos
Important information regarding Cameos
The condition of a cameo is a very important point and can influence its value.
Most of the antique cameos have stress lines or hairlines due to their age or often by origin. We can find lines even in the new cameos, this is a peculiarity of the shell, and then we are talking of 100/200 years old cameos. These stress lines or incipient cracks or very tiny chips don't have to make us worried, unless the cameo is broken or has a large crack. The most important point is that the carving should be not worn.

CONDITION
Very good antique condition. As mentioned brooch fittings have been removed. Shell Cameo is in lovely condition, no cracks. Fine stress lines indicative of age, not deep and are only on the surface. Box is just gorgeous and we will miss this one terribly, inside lining has worn and frayed over time and fading to red leather box, clasp is original and functions.
