Antique Georgian Natural Garnet Riviere 9ct Gold Necklace Circa 1800

Collections: Sold Archive

A Stunning Georgian circa 1800 foil backed flat table cut Almandine Garnet Riviere necklace in 9 Carat Gold mount. Circa 1800.

Fully closed back, ‘pinched pie-crust’ settings throughout, set with forty (40) flat cut Almandine garnets of the most beautiful lush and bright plum coloured garnets.

Each garnet measures approximately 8mm x 5mm or approximately 1 carat each.
Each garnet is in excellent condition, no chip, cracks, abrasions, incredible condition for their age.
The closed gold backings are in almost as good condition as the garnets.. with only three having tiny insignificant impressions, cannot really even describe them as dents.

The clasp is an almost invisible push in clasp set with a garnet of course, and works perfectly and clasps securely.

Originally this piece would have started its life as part of a parure, consisting of a necklace, earrings, pendant and two matching bracelets.  This riviere IS the two bracelets, which sometime in antiquity, had been permanently joined tighter to create the riviere you see before you.

This is quite a common practice actually, as parures were separated and repurposed through the generations, we have seen it done many a time.  This piece is after all around 220 years old…..

There is a slight solder mark to the joining of the two original bracelets which is only visible to the back and by the workmanship would have been done generations ago.  (Please see photos). This wonderful riviere measures a lovely long 42.5cm.
