Quite a rare and hand to find piece by Australian jewellery firm A.Benjamin and Sons.
‘Abraham Benjamin founded his business in 1887 in Melbourne after the dissolution of his previous endeavour with P. Falk and Co.

By 1903 the firm had become A. Benjamin and Son Pty Ltd.   They were members of the M.J.A. of Victoria from the time of its inception (1889)’.

Modelled as an ornate crucifix from 9ct rose gold which has been ***‘bloomed’ to give the appearance of a hight carat gold which was a favourite finish in the Victorian and Edwardian areas, the chased areas allow the hint of rose gold to show though which is charming.

Hand chased to the four points of the cross and set to the centre with the teeniest little natural seed pearl celestial crescent we have ever seen to a three tiered spray set with three green Garnet topped doublets (we assume representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

Stamped with A. Benjamin and Sons hallmark of a ‘Bee’ and 9 for 9ct gold, this little early piece of Australian history would make the perfect addition your jewellery collection.

History of Blooming
Blooming was a popular finishing technique for karat gold jewellery from 1870 to 1890, was first documented in 1853. The means for creating a bloom finish involved dipping a gold item into a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), saltpeter (potassium nitrate), salt and water. This process burned off any alloys on the surface resulting in an alloy-free, thin layer of soft, pure gold on the item.
