This handsome early Victorian ring was manufactured in 1839, assayed in London, and is clearly hallmarked as such.

Crafted from 18ct yellow gold this splendid early ring is designed as a mourning/memorial ring and features intricate gothic script to the entire shank in gold and deep black vitreous enamel spelling out ‘In Memory Of’.

The head of the ring features twelve original half seed Pearl set in pie-crust settings typical of the Georgian and early Victorian era, and, to the centre of the Pearls we find an Opal doublet which is a later replacement.

Originally a glassed hair compartment, or an enamelled lozenge perhaps with an initial would have been present.  However the Opal doublet is charming, suits the ring quite well, and is especially vibrant with flashes of scintillating blues, reds and greens!

A substantial and comfortable ring to wear, with an impressive spread on the finger of 1.3cm x 1.0cm, this early piece of is makes quite the impression and is quite conversation starter.

CONDITION
Very very good antique 185 year old condition.  Enamel is lovely, original with no messy ‘touch ups’, minor losses to verso only.  Pearls are all original with no re-glues, some age related name loss commensurate with age.  Opal doublet is a later replacement, however it looks wonderful, very vibrant.  Hallmarks are crisp and legible, slight fading to one letter in makers mark only.  A quite substantial, early ring.
