History of Walter Hunter Stevenson 1855-1930
Walter Hunter Stevenson (1855–1930) was a prominent Adelaide jeweller in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Victoria, he apprenticed under Phillip Wing in Little Collins Street Melbourne before moving to Adelaide in 1875. Moving to Adelaide in 1875 working as a journeyman for P. Flak & Co. and then in 1878, he and his brother William - a trained watchmaker - founded Stevenson Brothers in Gawler Place, relocating to 6 Rundle Street in 1881.
Known for gold and silver craftsmanship, their jewellery featured Australian motifs, opals, and gemstones, with pieces like diamond rings and brooches marked “Stevenson.” The business thrived into the 1920s, with Walter’s son Malcolm joining. A civic figure, Stevenson served on the Adelaide City Council (1886–1887) and became president of the Retail Jewellers Association.
He died in 1930, leaving a legacy of finely crafted, collectible jewellery.
