Superb and highly collectible this increasingly hard to find antique Australian brooch is by one of our most famous early jewellery firms Duggin and Shappere.

Crafted around 1910 from soft hued 9ct rose gold and modelled as our iconic Kookaburra sitting on a branch and embellished with natural Turquoise cabochon and natural seed pearls with a tiny faceted garnet for his eye.

History of Duggin and Shappere

Duggin, Shappere and Co. established their business in Howey Place, off Little Collins Street in Melbourne in 1896.  It was one of the major jewellery manufacturers operating in Australian in the first quarter of the 20th century. Producing an extensive range of gold jewellery for the increasing demand from the ever growing Australian population.  Their use of seed pearls is well known in their original designs of both pendants and brooches.

Their trademark hallmark featuring an ‘Anchor’ was used in conjunction with the guarantee marks of the Manufacturing Jewellers’ Association of Victoria, seen here on this remarkable original design.

Moving premises several times the settled into their final premises at 343 Little Collins Street where they continued until 1932”.

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition.  A finely crafted piece in true Australian craftsmanship.  All half seed Pearls are original and well set, one shows a pinkish hue but is original not a replacement.

Turquoise are well matched and well set, two sit a little higher than the other two and may be early replacements but are lovely, only mentioning for accuracy.  No repairs, C clasp and pin are original, pin not tested for carat, may be gold filled for strength typical or the era, however may be 9ct also.
