Antique 9ct Gold Eléphant Hair Triple Hoop Earrings
A fabulous and highly collectible pair of Elephant hair earrings dating to the colonial period in Africa.
Unusually and rarely seen this particular pair are triple hoops, which each hoop a single strand of elephant hair in graduated form, the largest measuring a superb 3.4cm.
Suspending the hoops are 9ct gold shepherd hooks with long backs for added security, to a further open round loop feature, and the face framing length of these earrings is a wonderful 6cm.
Front facing these hoop earrings drop superbly, are eye catching and impressive, light on the ear, and sway beautifully with every movement.
History of Elephant Hair Jewellery
Elephant hair jewellery originated thousands of years ago with the early African tribesmen who believed elephants were the only connection between the Heavens and the Earth. They would incorporate elephant tail hair into their jewellery to ward off illness, protect them from harm, to bring them love and happiness.
Later from around the mid eighteenth century when India came under British rule or 'Raj', British colonists, traders and tourist would travel to India to go on safari and hunt exotic game (it happened.. we do not endorse this) they would ride on the back of the elephant and when finished they would commission pieces of jewellery to be made from their favourite mounts tail hair (the elephant was not harmed!).

Excellent antique condition. No splitting or fraying to elephant hair hoops, tubular fittings very secure with no damage. Shepherd hooks are firm and straight with no issues. No issues to note.
