Antique Victorian ‘Gold Filled’ Folding Locket Circa 1880
This charming mid to late Victorian locket is manufactured in ‘gold fill’, a technique first patented and used around the early 19th century.
During the mid to late Victorian era gold filled jewellery was very common and made in vast quantities for the Victorian consumers as gold was scarce and the rise of commodities through the industrial revolution drove this demand.
Made to last, these pieces of early gold filled jewellery could last for years to decades.
This stunning example is testament to the quality of craftsmanship as, to the eye, this locket looks and feel like gold with no losses to the finish.
Hinged to fold out and reveal a central two paned glass compartment to which a photo can be added easily as one pane lifts out (the other is secured) and the two solid sides can also hold a photo if desired.
Double sided with engraving to both, one side is a densely scrolled floral pattern and the other has a cartouche to the centre for initials (uninscribed) which is surrounded by a floral garland and then an interesting ‘greek key’ motif to the outer edge.
A lovely size, not too big, not too small at 3.3cm x 2.8cm, with a good sized bale we believe to be the original.
This locket looks and feels good and has obviously been treasured or locked away for 100 plus years and to retain such lovely condition.
