History of RUSSELLS’ - Established in 1848
Thomas Russell was listed as a watchmaker in 1848 at 20 Slater Street Liverpool and later at 30 Slater Street.
In or around 1859 he appears to have handed over the control of the company to a Thomas Robert Russell and Alfred Holgate Russell (we assume his Sons) and the firm changed its name to Thomas Russell & Son.
By 1877 the company had moved its premises to Church Street.
Thomas Robert Russell continued as the proprietor of the Russell Watch and Chronometer Manufactory at Cathedral Works, 18 Church Street, with addresses in Piccadilly, Toronto and Canada.
In 1894 it became Russell's Limited and continued as retail jewellers with branches in Liverpool, and by the early 1900s Manchester and Llandudno.
Alfred Russell continued the company of Thomas Russell & Son and in 1880 the company was listed as watch and chronometer manufacturers and machine-made keyless lever and jewellery merchants by appointment to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and the Admiralty.
The business was started by Thomas Russell in the mid-19th century making watches and chronometers, with premises originally in Slater Street. This magnificent building was at 18 Church Street by which time the company were retailing jewellery as well as watches.
