Antique Victorian Bohemian Garnet Four Row Bangle - 1880-1890
Dating to the late Victorian era circa 1880-90 this wonderful, heavy 33 gram original Bohemian Garnet bangle is just superb.
A similar example can be seen in the E. V. Roddin catalogue 1887 (see photo below).
This early example is crafted in 800-830 grade silver with a gold/gilt wash ( not plated like reproduction pieces ) which is evident to all the claws and outer rims of the bangle. The internal surface is silver.
Four rows - perhaps three as they are in staggered formation - of luscious rose-cut Bohemian Garnets shimmer their deep red pomegranate glow for the full circumference of this wide 1.1cm bangle.
Closes with a very secure box clasp and original safety chain.
In quite remarkable condition for her approximately grand old age of 140 years this beauty has another lifetime to shine if worn with care!
A featured article in the ‘Journal of the Society of the Arts’ August 25th 1892, mentioned that at that time there were over 3000 cutters working in 500 shops in the Bohemian Garnet industry. When including the miners and other workers there were approximately 10.000 people employed in the industry!
Garnets were mounted in high and low carat gold, gold plate, mixed metals, Tombac / garnet gold during the Victorian era and in more recent times Sterling Silver. A good indication of a ‘newer’ 20th-21st century piece is a 925 stamp.

CONDITION
Very good antique condition. Under very close magnification two Garnets near rear hinge may have been replaced, all other Garnets appear original with no chips. Bangle is silver - 800-830 grade inside, gilt wash is evident to all claws around Garnets and rims of bangle. Gilt is slightly worn to box clasp. Otherwise just lovely condition.
