Antique Victorian 9ct Rose Gold Seed Pearl And Enamel Mourning Locket Circa 1870’s
Dating to the Victorian era circa 1870’s this superb locket (and it matching mate) would have likely been commissioned by a family as mourning locket(s), as a keepsake after the passing of a loved one.
Both lockets are in wonderful condition, apparently worn seldomly given their wonderful condition, and of quality craftsmanship.
Both are large examples measuring a drop of 4.8cm with top V bale x 3.0cm.
To the front compartments we find highly ornate initials we believe to be ‘AMHF’, in gold and set with an array of varying sized natural half seed Pearls, all original and with no replacements, to a stunning background of black enamel work.
The rear compartment is equally stunning, (these lockets can be worn to the reverse), with an outer engraved floral border surroundings a symbolic engraved ‘buckle’ design symbolising the connection and strength required during the mourning process. To the centre of the buckle an uninscribed banner is present which would, and could still have initials engraved.
This locket retains one inner compartment rim and hard paned window, sadly the other has been lost to time.. opens and closes perfectly, and the large V shaped bale with accommodate a large chain.
Striking in appearance, versatile as they can be worn to either side, and in lovely condition, we hope both these poignant pieces of Victoriana become family heirlooms once again.
