An absolutely splendid Georgian era ‘quizzing glass’ dating to the late Georgian era circa 1820.

These fabulous pieces were worn around the neck of a chain or ribbon and are both beautifully decorative and functional pieces of jewellery.

This fine example is crafted in gold which has been tested as 13ct (XRF) in repoussé fashion with floral detailing throughout.  Set with either a prescription lens or plain glass ( this one seems to be slightly corrective indicating a prescription lens ) and is mounted with a swivel-mounted loop handle.

A quizzing glass was not only a functional piece of jewellery but a decorative item also.  Almost always set with a magnifier lens, however some were set with a corrective lens which would have been obtained from an optician.

Some are even set with plain glass which indicates they were such the height of fashion at the time and worn not only as a visual aid but simply as decorative pieces of jewellery.

Worn 200 years ago on a black ribbon or chain and just waiting to be worn and seen again!

CONDITION
Very very good antique condition.  Original glass.  One tiny repair done in antiquity to floral chasing around glass, so well done the repoussé work was replicate and folded to match, appears slightly silver under scrutiny.  Minor marks to glass, nothing deep or significant.
