Antique early Australian 15ct Yellow Gold Floral Patterned Crucifix Circa 1900
This absolutely wonderful antique crucifix features ornate ‘trefoil’ ends to each of the four points (a common symbolism used in Christianity) with a crisp floral hand chased pattern to the centre extending to each arm of the crucifix.
To the bottom point of the verso is the makers stamp, a ‘Unicorn’ which despite being faint in appearance is still identifiable, belonging to one of our most influential early Australian jewellery firms, Willis and Sons. Willis and Sons would incorporate the use of a ‘W’ post 1904, prior to this, their jewellery would feature the ‘Unicorn’ making this piece pre 1904 in manufacture.
In addition, a crisp ’15’ denoting the caratage and the ‘hanging fleece’ which was the Melbourne Manufacturer Jewellers Association (M.J.A) guarantee mark representing the ‘guarantee’ of cartage.
Pretty it in its proportions, lending itself to many styling opportunities, this lovely piece of early Australian craftsmanship would make the perfect Christmas present or gift for the collector at heart.
