HISTORY OF J.N DUMBRELL, DUMBRELLS JEWELLERY: 1914-1950

First listed in the Sands and McDougall’s ‘Directory of Victoria’ in 1914 at 299 Little Collins Street trading then as watchmakers and jewellers.
By 1916 they had expanded and had become increasingly involved in the manufacturing side of the business.

J.N Dumbrell was especially noted for his pendants and brooches which often utilised seed pearls.  His mark/symbol was a ‘Pyramid’ and was used in conjunction with the Manufacturing Jewellers’ Association of Victorian guarantee marks.

Opening a new premises at 319 Bourke Street in 1922  to accommodate his ever expanding business by now Dumbrells was a well known establishment.  His Little Collins Street store continued to trade as jewellery wholesalers and manufacturers until 1928.

J.N Dumbrell of 319 Bourke Street became Dumbrells in 1931, then Dumbrells Jewellers Pty Ltd in 1937.   In 1951 the business was acquired by Prouds Pty Ltd.
