We are not sure how to even describe this incredible early piece of Australian craftsmanship … it is perhaps one of the most beautiful double Albert chains we’ve had the pleasure of offering.

We can only assume it was crafted - approximately 107 years ago - and put away in a jewellery box or a safe and never worn.

It is in pristine condition, as good as the day it was made by one of our early Australian jewellers A.A. Stewart of Stewart Bros - Melbourne, and hallmarked with his trademark symbol of a ‘Heart’ and M.J.A of Victoria guarantee marks.

Crafted from bright 15ct yellow gold in fancy flat belcher link style with an ornate rope twist embellishing every alternate link.

The T bar drops from two small to one larger round link and is hallmarked not once but twice to either end with Stewart Bros hallmark, the ‘Heart, 15 and the ‘Hanging Fleece’ - M.J.A. of Victorias’ guarantee mark for 15ct gold.

Each of the two original dog clips (in perfect working order and condition) are stamped for 15ct as are several of the flat belcher links in the chain.

We see these chains in the literature on antique Australian jewellery (see pics) and are thrilled to be able to offer this one to the market.

HISTORY OF STEWART BROS: Stewart Bros, A.A. Stewart c.1912-1929

Stewart Bros of 17 Wigton Street Ascot Vale Melbourne Victoria were gold chain manufacturers.

In 1912 A.A. Stewart registered a design (No. 1003) for a fancy curb chain applicable to the production of bracelets and gentleman’s Albert chains.

Their mark, a “Heart’ was used in conjunction with the M.J.A of Victoria guaranteed marks.

By 1926 Albert Stewart had moved to 743 Mt Alexander Road Moon Ponds, evidently working there until 1929.
