Antique 18ct Yellow Gold Taille D’épargne (Enamel) Earrings Circa 1880-1900
Please note, boxes are for display only unless otherwise stated.
A delightful pair of antique earrings dating to the late Victorian era.
Crafted in 18ct yellow gold to the front plate where we find highly ornate and detailed enamelling called ’taille d’épargne’ from the French term translating as ‘saving cut’.
Crafted in two sections, the front plate holding this exquisite enamelling technique has been tested by our gemologist/jeweller as 18ct gold, and the rear plate in pinchbeck or gold filled, quite typical to find mixed mediums in antique jewellery ( we will always have all components tested for accuracy!)
Suspended by 9ct gold shepherds hooks these large, and beautiful, earrings drop a stunning 3cm from the ear and are almost 2cm round, front facing of course, and make quite the statement when worn.
Taille d’épargne , sometimes referred to as black enamel tracery, translates from the French literally as “saving cut.” It is a variation of champlevé whereby engraved lines forming a design are incised into the metal and are filled with opaque enamel – usually black – like basse taille enameling but without the subtle depth variations.
