Antique Georgian/Early Victorian Amethyst ‘Pansy’ Earrings Circa 1800-1830
The word Pansy is derived from the French word Pensée which means ‘thought’. The Pansy became synonymous with the term ‘think of me.
Pansy jewellery was often exchanged between lovers, and meant the giver was always thinking of the recipient”
Popular during the Georgian era these highly symbolic pieces were to be found in the form of rings, brooches and earrings. To find a still existing, as a pair, is of course, highly desirable.
Crafted from low carat gold (testing as just under 9ct) and set with an array of mostly pear-cut Amethysts, set in cut down collets, colour foil backed to produce an even deeper hue, and flat closed backed settings to the verso.
During the Georgian era gems were set in closed back settings with foil, sometimes coloured, yellow, red , blue and green, to provide another layer of luminescence, depth and to intensify the colours of the gemstones used.
The vibrancy of the Amethysts in these exquisite earrings is breathtaking, deep ‘Siberian’ Amethyst in colour with flashes of rosey deep pinks sparkling in the light, one can only imagine these twinkling in the candlelight some 200 years ago..
A long drop from the ear at 5cm, articulated, therefore dancing with any movement, and just the perfect not too heavy not too light weight in the ear.
