Vintage Australian Mid Century Sterling Silver Boulder Opal Belt Buckle

A remarkable piece of vintage Australian craftsmanship, indeed a functional piece of art, in the form of a large Sterling Silver belt buckle.

Without a doubt a one-of-a-kind piece, handcrafted, with the centrepiece and star of the show, a large freeform Australian Boulder Opal in the shape of (the best) state in Australia - Tasmania!

Dating, we believe, to around the mid 20th however with out provenance or a makers mark this piece could be a little earlier or later. Simply stamped in two corners with the distinctly Australian silver mark - STG SIL - but with years of experience both we, and our jeweller gemmologist, given the quality, feel and manufacture of this piece would date it to the mid 20th century.

The Opal measures a large 3.2cm x 3cm (approximately), and exhibits a range of colours - shades of blues, greens, yellows and interesting matrix brown flecks.
Surrounding the Opal is a rope twist border, to a textured large flat plaque with a raised outer border.

To the verso we find the delightful hand engraved map of Australia and Tasmania, with openwork cut outs which the matrix backing of the Opal can be seen.

A large, one of a kind piece, not only a functional piece jewellery, this work of art could also be displayed in a display cabinet with your other one of a kind treasures!

CONDITION
Very very good vintage condition. A handmade piece with expected signs as such, minor marks to silver. Opal displays natural inclusions, imperfections and matrix. Minor and shallow sliver chips, hard to detect given the Opal is natural, freeform and ‘uneven’ in texture. A fabulous one off, handcrafted piece of Australian jewellery art history.
