DESCRIPTION (Please scroll to the bottom to view video)
The first thing we need to mention about this ring is that it has been assessed by two qualified independent Gemologists.
First assessment was “likely synthetic” (lab grow as compared to earth grown). The second assessment, and we quote “There is banding possibly slightly curved, indeterminate, POSSIBLY synthetic”.
So do we seek a second, third, fourth assessment? From experience if two qualified gemologists who have both been in the industry for decades cannot reach a positive identification then we just sell this stunningly good ring and move on.
NB - Lab created Sapphires are Sapphires that are grown in a laboratory as compared to grown in the ground but share virtually all chemical, optical, and physical characteristics of its natural mineral counterpart.
Crafted in or around the 1940’s art the height of the ‘Retro’ era, probably French in manufacture and designed in 18ct yellow gold and set to the centre with this beautiful intense blue Sapphire of approximately 0.55ct, bead grain set, to a square frame which is micro millgrain edged.
Surrounding the Sapphire are eighteen small rose-cut diamonds measuring between approximately 1.3mm to 1.97mm, also bead grain set to a rectangular frame with micro millgrain edging.
The top plate is finished with rolling segmented accents, all of which sits upon an ornate gallery to wide 9mm shoulders tapering gradually to a 4.2mm rear shank.
A heavy ring at 9.1 grams, solid and beautifully made, low rise at 5.2mm and crafted to feel delicious on the finger.
WHAT IS A SYNTHETIC GEM?
A synthetic gem material is one that is made in a laboratory, but which shares virtually all chemical, optical, and physical characteristics of its natural mineral counterpart, though in some cases, namely synthetic turquoise and synthetic opal, additional compounds can be present.
Synthetic gem crystals have been manufactured since the late 1800s, and their production is often marked by a need for them in industrial applications outside of the jewelry industry.
Synthetic corundum, which includes ruby and sapphire, can be made by the greatest number of processes. Because of this, synthetic corundum is available at many price levels, from very affordable to very expensive.
Sapphire – some of the earliest examples of synthetic sapphires are in original pieces of art nouveau and art deco jewellery. Many synthetic sapphires are still made by flame fusion, but flux-grown sapphires have been available since the 1960s. Flux-grown, pulled and hydrothermal synthetic sapphires can be very convincing substitutes for the natural gem.
