An early pocket watch key winder dating to the mid Victorian era circa 1850-60’s.
Key winding watches were first made during the 16th century and remained in use until Adrien Philippe invented the stem winding watch in 1842.

Usually ornate in design, watch keys were made of gold or silver, however most were gold cased or gold gilt.

This charming example is in gold gilt, heavily chased with scrolling patterns to body and top swivel bale, and features an antique-cut paste (glass) stone resembling an Amethyst to one side, and to the other an antique-cut paste resembling a Citrine.

A lovely size at 3.8cm x 1.3cm at the widest central section, an ideal size to wear as a pendant or even as a large charm for that treasured charm bracelet, these beautifully made functional jewellery pieces are always quite the conversation starter when worn.
